<image:title>Blog - Hiding from the world - Sometimes there are things you don’t want to face. Things that are scary and anxiety provoking and bothersome. It’s okay to take some time to retreat. Just remember, there are friends and family outside and people who care about you. Even though there is pain and suffering, there’s also a world of love and acceptance when you’re ready to venture out. (Also, it can be dusty down there, so don’t stay hiding for too long)</image:title>

      <image:title>About Me - Emily Lui, M.A., LMFT</image:title>
<image:caption>As a psychotherapist, my goal is to help you navigate and embrace the directions you want in your life. My approach to therapy starts with the idea that people are doing the best they can with what they know and the resources they have. Although they sometimes get stuck with a singularly focused problem-filled narrative, people are not one-dimensional but instead have many stories, strengths, connections and challenges. Having a safe space to talk and explore can help bring new awareness, resilience, appreciation and capacities to the forefront. I am a second generation Taiwanese American born in upstate New York. I spent most of my childhood on the East Coast before moving to California in high school. In college, I studied one year abroad in Japan before coming back to California where I currently live with my husband and two daughters. My life experiences, including growing up with immigrant parents, maneuvering between cultures and identities, and surviving postpartum and parenting (so far!) informs my work as a therapist.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - What is psychotherapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you've never been to therapy before you may wondering what is it, what do we do, and how will it help me? People come to therapy suffering in crisis and pain. Something needs to change but they're not sure what, why, or how. We'll start by meeting weekly. We'll use the first few sessions to get an understanding of what's going on and decide on how to best approach the problem at hand. Then we'll move into an action phase of creating space to make changes, develop skills and develop a narrative of growth. Along the way, we'll check in frequently to make sure we're headed in the right direction and make adjustments as necessary. When things start feel better, you may decide to meet every other week or stop meeting completely when you're ready. Starting therapy can be awkward and uncomfortable at first. It can feel weird to tell a stranger your innermost thoughts and feelings, especially ones that feel shaming or painful. It can be difficult to open the boxes of feelings and experiences that were easier to just avoid before. As our therapeutic relationship develops, it will become easier to open up and talk about things you may not have talked about before. You will develop the skills and confidence to re-write your story and keep moving forward.</image:caption>
